FSC Operations Guide Appendix A: Mobile FamilySearch Center Detailed Processes

Power the Chromebook On and Off for Guests

Power On

Step 1: In the upper right corner of the keyboard, above the backspace button, press the power button represented by a circle with a vertical line.

Step 2: You will see a shut down or feedback option screen.

Step 3: The screen will display the Chrome name and logo. Wait for the FamilySearch icon to appear on the log-in screen.

Note: In the bottom left corner of the screen, you will see options to shut down the computer or add a person. The add person option adds a second account to the Chromebook but only allows specialized bookmarks under the additional profile user.

Step 4: Using the touch pad below the keyboard, under the FamilySearch logo, click the circle with an arrow.

Note: At the bottom of the screen, you will see a message that states, “Chromebook managed by ldsmail.net.” The ldsmail.net domain can be substituted for other domains, such as familyhistorymail.org and churchservicemail.org. For all newly issued Chromebooks, the familyhistorymail.org domain will be used.

Step 5: Set your language and keyboard preferences by selecting the correct options from the associated drop-down arrows.

Step 6: To confirm the language and keyboard settings, click the circle button with an arrow.

Step 7: Once you have logged in, you will be directed to a Chrome internet browser page that defaults to the FamilySearch.org home page.

Note: For areas with low bandwidth, the Family Tree Lite option is available to use.

Power Off

To power off the Chromebook, navigate to the lower right corner, using the touch pad, and select the exit session option.

Note: Once you have logged out, any accessed websites and any data entered will be removed from the Chromebook.

Liahona Wi-Fi Network

Connect to Wi-Fi

Step 1: At the bottom right portion of the screen, in the Quick Settings Panel, click the wi-fi icon(represented by a blank upside down triangle).

Step 2: Click the Not Connected button.

Note: If you already see a wi-fi network name and signal strength, your Chromebook is already connected to wi-fi.

Step 3: Select the correct wi-fi network.

Note: Your Chromebook will automatically look for available networks and show them in a list.

Step 4: Enter the password, if required, for the network you have chosen.

Open Network

Step 1: At the bottom right of the screen, click the upside down triangle.

Step 2: Select the network to which you want to connect.

Note: Remember that your information might be visible to other people when joining an open network.

Secure Network

Open networks do not require a password and are, therefore, not secure. Using a secure network that requires a password is the best practice.

Step 1: At the bottom right of the screen, click the upside down triangle with a lock.

Step 2: Type the associated password for the network.

Step 3: Select Connect.

Reset the Chromebook

Step 1: On the keyboard, hold the power button and backspace button down at the same time.

Step 2: Release the power and backspace buttons when the menu appears asking if you want to reset the system.

Step 3: To reset the system to factory default, select yes.

Step 4:  This action will wipe the Chromebook clean.

Note: All previous customizations, including other joined networks and any saved bookmarks, will be removed.

Step 5: Look for the default profile to appear with the Liahona network.

Recover the Chromebook

Before Attempting Recovery

Step 4: If the Chromebook has internet access, select the Recover using internet connection option, and follow the instructions on the screen.
