Quality Checks

Because we capture images and metadata, 2 quality checks are performed on each image capture:

  • Image quality: To ensure digital quality standards are met and to request rework.
  • Metadata quality: To ensure the descriptive information associated with each image is accurate and to provide feedback to the camera operator.

After the image and metadata quality checks are completed and rights verified, the records are added to the Family History Library Catalog, and the images are made available on the FamilySearch website.

Metadata and Other Descriptive Information

The metadata (descriptive information) is made available to guests in the following ways.

  • Index: Thousands of volunteers index images by recording the names and other information about the record in a database. This creates an easily searchable index to the records and provides the basis for FamilySearch record hints.
  • Catalog: FamilySearch cataloguers create catalog descriptions for collections that then become part of the Family History Library Catalog. This provides another way for guests to access information in records.
