Using the double-page capture mode, you can capture both pages at once. DCam automatically separates and then saves each page as its own individual image.
Step 1: Place the book on the copyboard so the left and right pages can be viewed together.
Step 2: To capture the book cover, click the Single Page Autocrop template, making sure that the spine and any writing on the cover are visible. If the record custodian does not want the book spread face down, write the information on a 3 x 5 card. Place the card on top of the closed book and capture the card and cover as the first image.
Step 3: To capture the pages of a book, create a double-crop template or select the predefined Autosplit template. By creating a template with autocrop, images are captured with a 1/4-1/2 inch border around each page. The left and right sides of the template will overlap approximately ½ inch past the gutter of the book on either side.
Note: Capture to the edge of the pages only. Do not include the outer edge of the book cover.
Step 4: Place the book open using wedges, if needed. Click Capture to capture both the left and right pages at the same time. Use one of the following to capture an image:
- Touch pad or touch switch (recommended because keyboard and X-Keys tend to wear out when used repetitively)
- X-Key capture button
- Template assigned to an X-Key
- F2, enter key, or spacebar on keyboard
- Mouse (not recommended because it slows down the capture process).
Note: In double-page capture mode, do not use the blank button to mark a page as blank unless both pages are blank.
Step 5: Turn the page and capture the next 2 pages. Use clamps or other tools as needed to keep the pages within the depth of field.
Step 6: Use the insert, retake, or delete X-Keys to fix any problems.
- Insert captures both a left and right page.
- Retake captures both the left and right pages and replaces and deletes the old image.
- Delete marks either the left or right page for deletion. When 1 is selected for deletion, the other is also marked for deletion.
Step 7: After you have captured the book, evaluate the images. Be aware of shadows, focus problems, and blurs. If you identify issues, flag the images, and return to the capture screen to fix them.
Step 8: Return the book to the archive, and get the next book or set of documents to capture.
