Local Surnames
Lǐ
Derived from the surname Ying. From the descendants of Gao Tao, the post-generation sign of the Gao Yang clan belonged to the official title as a surname, and the surname was changed because of avoiding disaster. Legend has it that Gao Tao, also known as Gui Wei, was the great-grandchild of the Shao Wu clan, the leader of the Dongyi people in ancient times.Gao Tao once held the post of Dali (the officer in charge of the Criminal Law Prison). His son Bai Yi was given the surname of Ying. Later, his descendants continued to hold the post of Dali for three generations. His descendants according to the customs of the time, took the name of the official position as the surname, called Richards. Towards the end of the Shang Dynasty, a descendant of Gao Tao was killed for speaking frankly to the king.Zhi He, the wife of Zhi Zhi, went out with her young son Lizhen to escape, and went to a place called "Ruins of Yihou" (that is, a place where Yihou lived and later abandoned) in the Yihe River Basin in western Henan. The mother and son were very hungry and exhausted. Fortunately, Zhi He found that there were some "trees" (that is, the fruits on the trees) in the nearby trees, and the mother and son saved their lives by eating these wild fruits.Later, they arrived in eastern Henan, and settled in Gu County (now east of Luyi County, Henan Province), not far from Huaiyang. In order to thank "Muzi" for saving their lives, and also to escape the pursuit of the king, and because their ancestor Gao Tao once served as the post of Yao and Shun Dali (that is, the officer in charge of criminal law), and "Li" and "Li" are synonymous and can be used, so from the beginning of Rizhen, Rizhi was changed to Li.
