How Can I Volunteer?

• Enjoy working with people and learning new things.
• Greet guests coming to the San Diego FamilySearch Center and assist them to familiarize themselves with FamilySearch online resources such as FamilySearch website including Family Tree and the Memories Gallery, the FamilySearch Research Wiki, Indexing, etc.
• Help guests at the San Deigo FamilySearch Center scan photographs, and personal document and digitize videos and movies.
• Help guests plan and strategize how to continue their genealogical research.
• Explore your own genealogical interests and become more comfortable and proficient using the numerous available FamilySearch tools using the “Learn by Doing” method. You won’t “get it right” every time, but you will learn and grow by trying again and you can help others to avoid your missteps.
• Become familiar with the records and resources of a specific locality, region, and/or country for which you have an interest. Pursue your passion!
• Teach concepts in a one-on-one setting so guests will be empowered to continue the research on their own.

A Virtual Records Operation Center (VROC) missionary will have the opportunity to participate in multiple activities that support the purpose of FamilySearch which is to enable inspiring journeys that bring joy to all people as they discover, gather, and connect their family—past, present, and future. Our missionaries live in the United States and Canada and serve from home. You will have the opportunity to learn new skills, increase your knowledge of family history, develop relationships, and serve your brothers and sisters on both sides of the veil.

What is the Oak Tree Project:

As a result of indexing and work accumulated over generations, we have been able to establish an in-depth Family Tree for the US. Unfortunately, despite tremendous history and records in England they do not have the depth of published and documented information we have.

Using the UK 1911 Census, about 5 million records, volunteers help add these families to the Family Tree. To insure as accurate a record as possible we have developed training materials and hold monthly training meetings to review processes. We have developed standards for the project and have an organizational structure that improves the overall quality of the records completed.

There are currently 200 volunteers and missionaries on this project. We welcome more volunteers from the community. You can choose how involved you would like to be. The minimum participation after getting trained is to add a few records a month so you can remember the process.
