How Can I Volunteer?

• Help guests at the Riverton FamilySearch Center familiarize themselves with FamilySearch (the Family Tree, Wiki, Catalog, indexing, etc.).
• Help guests at the Riverton FamilySearch Center scan photographs, personal books, articles, etc.
• Help guests strategize how to continue their genealogical research.
• Already be comfortable using FamilySearch (including the Family Tree, the Wiki, and the Catalog).
• Be familiar with the records and resources of a specific country or locality, whether that be the USA or another country.
• Enjoy working with people.
• Teach concepts in a one-on-one setting so guests will be empowered to continue the research on their own.

A Virtual Records Operation Center (VROC) missionary will have the opportunity to participate in multiple activities that support the purpose of FamilySearch which is to enable inspiring journeys that bring joy to all people as they discover, gather, and connect their family—past, present, and future. Our missionaries live in the United States and Canada and serve from home. You will have the opportunity to learn new skills, increase your knowledge of family history, develop relationships, and serve your brothers and sisters on both sides of the veil.

What is the Oak Tree Project:

As a result of indexing and work accumulated over generations, we have been able to establish an in-depth Family Tree for the US. Unfortunately, despite tremendous history and records in England they do not have the depth of published and documented information we have.

Using the UK 1911 Census, about 5 million records, volunteers help add these families to the Family Tree. To insure as accurate a record as possible we have developed training materials and hold monthly training meetings to review processes. We have developed standards for the project and have an organizational structure that improves the overall quality of the records completed.

There are currently 200 volunteers and missionaries on this project. We welcome more volunteers from the community. You can choose how involved you would like to be. The minimum participation after getting trained is to add a few records a month so you can remember the process.
