Did you know that before FamilySearch was the organization we know today, it was called the Genealogical Society of Utah(GSU)? November 13, 2019 marks the 125th anniversary of the GSU.

The GSU was founded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the goals of “collecting, establishing and maintaining a genealogical library for the use and benefit of its members and others” and spreading “information regarding genealogical matters.”

In 1999, the GSU was renamed “FamilySearch” to prepare for the launch of its first website, FamilySearch.org. Since its beginnings in 1894, FamilySearch has worked to publish over 4 billion online historical records, grow its family tree of over 1.2 billion names, and provide help in its over 5,000 family history centers worldwide! Check out the graphics below for even more facts about this incredible organization. Click on the images for a larger view.

The story of FamilySearch would not exist if not for the stories of our users.
