RootsTech Connect 2021 Presents Bruna Benites

We’d like to introduce you to Bruna Benites, international soccer sensation from Brazil, team captain of the 2012 Brazil women’s team, and all-around amazing person. Bruna Benitez spoke at RootsTech Connect 2021; you'll definitely want to hear what she had to say! Her keynote is still available to watch. Just sign in and enjoy!

Who Is Bruna Benites?

Bruna Beatriz Benites Soares was born on 16 October 1985 in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Shortly thereafter she met her first soccer ball. We’d like to give you a detailed description of her very first goal, but the truth of the matter is, our researchers have thus far been unsuccessful in uncovering the story.

Let’s just say that she scored lots of goals growing up and that it didn’t take a genius to see that the youth had talent.

What Is Bruna Benites Known For?

Bruna Benites’s resume as a professional soccer player is packed with achievements, including two Olympic appearances and multiple league and international championships, including the Conmebol Copa America Feminina—one of South America’s most prestigious competitions.

During the 2012 Olympics in London, Bruna served as captain of Brazil’s women’s team—a  distinct honor, to be sure. Since then, she has played as a defender on 7 professional teams in Norway, the United States, China, and Brazil.

In addition to her feats on the soccer field, Bruna graduated from Universidade Catolica dom Bosco in Campo Grande, Brazil, with a degree in physiotherapy. She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Bruna is aware of and grateful for her position as a role model. During her RootsTech Connect Keynote she said, "It’s very nice when I receive any kind of message from girls, children, that want to be players, and they can follow my career and to have me as a model. This is something that I appreciate very much, and I try to do my best to be a good example, because there are so many things going on in the world today, and we know that everybody needs good examples."

Where Is Bruna Benites Now?

Bruna spent the 2019–2020 season playing for Sport Club Internacional, a top-tier women’s professional team in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Despite the year’s many challenges, Bruna and her teammates ended the season as champions. In September, a short video of Bruna training with the national team was shown on ESPN and other sports websites after a parrot landed on her head and perched there for several seconds before flying to the goal post.

The incident might have been humorous if not for the thousands of acres of local wilderness that had recently been destroyed by fires. Bruna used the video on social media to draw awareness to the tragedy.
