Another Great Source for Finding Norwegian Ancestors: the Jacob Hersleb Horneman Collection

Do you have ancestors in the northern part of Norway that you are having difficulty finding? Then the Jacob Hersleb Hornemann collection may be one for you to search.

Jacob Hersleb Horneman was born in Trondheim, Norway, in 1819, and died there in 1886. He married Alette Blom in Trondheim in 1841. He was the son of Christian Hersleb Horneman (1781-1860), who was born and died in Trondheim, and his wife Fredrikke Horneman (1787-1852).

Jacob Hersleb Horneman’s collection contains detailed, handwritten information from 1628-1942. It mainly consists of genealogical research notes, compilations of Norwegian family pedigrees, extracts of probate records, mortgage records, and military and clerical probate records. It also includes death notices, obituaries, and articles clipped from newspapers by someone after Horneman’s death.

The Horneman collection is available on 25 microfilms (362387-362411) at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, or on loan at family history centers.

  • The main collection is found on films 362387-326404. Information is listed in alphabetical order by the surname, starting with book 1, letters A-Be, on microfilm 362387, and ending with the last letters, V-Ø, on microfilm 362404.
  • In the second part of the collection, on films 362405-362407, you can search a given-name extraction of probate records for the cities of Molde and Kristiansund and an extraction of probate records for the city of Trondheim.
  • In the last part of the collection, on films 362408-362411, you will find extraction of miscellaneous sources, such as deed records; military records and ecclesiastical probate records; extraction of probate records for Stjørdal, Verdal, Inderøy, and Namdal clerical districts in Nord-Trøndelag County; and extraction of probate records for the Nordmøre region of Møre og Romsdal County and the Fosen region and Orkdal clerical district in Sør-Trøndelag.

You will find that Horneman’s notes are written in gothic script, but they are usually clear and fairly easy to read.
So, if you are searching for ancestors in the Trondheim area, make sure you check the Horneman collection.
