Notizen

Microfilm of original records in The National Archives, Washington, D.C.

This microfilm publication contains "approximately 1,000 compiled military service records of volunteer soldiers who served during the Winnebago Indian Disturbances of 1827. Most of the volunteers served less than two months; many were mustered out of the service before the surrender of the Winnebago Indians. The first two rolls contain the compiled military service records of Michigan volunteers"--Introd.

"A typical compiled military servide record consists of a jacket-envelope containing card abstracts of entries relating to a soldier as found on original muster and pay rolls, rank rolls, and hospital records. The card abstracts were placed into a jacket-envelope bearing the soldier's name, rank, and military unit. For the most part, only one card abstract is found in each jacket; however, a few contain several cards. The cards typically show the date of entry into service; age; place of birth; place of residence at enlistment; and dates of discharge, separation by desertion, death, or dismissal. A few of the jackets include personal papers relating to the soldier"--Introd.

"The compiled military service records reproduced in this microfilm publication are arranged by state or territory, thereunder by company, and thereunder alphabetically by the surname of the soldier. At the beginning of the files of each company is a record-of-events jacket with cards containing information concerning the stations, movements, and activities of that unit from the time of its organization to its disbandment. The jackets of the compiled military service records and of the record of events cards are filmed before the cards within the jacket. No effort was made to arrange the cards in jacket"--Introd.

"A compiled military service record of a volunteer soldier from Illinois or Michigan who served during the Winnebago Indian Disturbances of 1827 may not appear in this publication for several reasons. First, he may have served in a unit which was part of the Regular Army. Second, a proper record of his service may not have been made; if made, it may have been lost or destroyed in the confusion that often accompanied initial mobilization, subsequent military operations, and troop disbandments. Third, reference to a soldier in the original records may have been so vague that it was impossible to determine his correct name or the unit in which he served. The compiled service record of a volunteer soldier may appear in this publication but be difficult to find because it appears under a variant name or a different spelling of his true name. There are no cross-reference cards for variations of spelling of names in these records"--Introd.
