Chiefly extracts, abstracts, and trancscripts of public records for the McNew and allied families of Washington County, Virginia, and elsewhere. Includes a brief genealogical sketch, taken chiefly from Bible and probate records.

Bryan McDonald and his wife, Mary McCombs McDonald, settled at Newcastle, Delaware, before 1689. In his will, probated in 1707, he mentioned seven children. His son, Bryan McDonald, married Catherine Robinson, and settled in Botetourt County, Virginia. In his will, probabted in 1757, he mentioned nine children. His daughter, Mary McDonald, married Tobias Smyth (d. 1757), the son of Ericus Smyth, a Swedish priest. They had four children. After her husband's death, Mary and her children settled at Glade Spring, Washington County, Virginia. Her daughter, Catherina Smyth, married Elisha McNew and settled near Glade Spring. They had thirteen children. Their daughter, Elizabeth MacNew (1797-1855), married Adam Thomas (1795-1886), son of Jacob and Louis Schults Thomas. They had fourteen children, 1816-1840. The family lived in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Includes West and Bowen descendants.
