Captain James Bratton, son of Captain James and Ann McFarland Dunlap Bratton of Augusta County, Virginia, was a captain of the Augusta Militia at the battle of Guilford County House in North Carolina in 1781. He and his wife, Rebecca Hogshead, had nine children. He died in Augusta County, Virginia, in 1828. Soon after his death, three of his sons and a daughter, migrated to Montgomery County, Indiana. His great grandson, William Harrison Bratton (1836-1911), was born in Montgomery County, Indiana, the son of James and Phoebe Allen Bratton. He married Nancy Ann Evans (1841- 1925), daughter of James E. and Rebecca Porter Evans, in 1860. They had twelve children, 1862-1883. The family migrated to Tama County, Iowa, ca. 1865. He died at Rolfe, Iowa.
