The District Court assumed jurisdiction over divorce proceedings in 1930. Prior to that time, divorces were handled in both the Civil and Probate Courts of Cleveland County. .

There are several series of case numbers for these records and there are gaps in the numerical sequences of the early records. Records prior to 1930, when the District Court assumed jurisdiction in divorce proceedings, could have been filed either in the case files of the Civil Court or the Probate Court. Divorce case files were numbered in with files of other civil proceedings, then later separated out and kept by the District Court. In addition, some of the earliest cases were not given numbers. In the indexes such files are designated "UN." These have been filed in with the numbered case files in roughly chronological order. In 1935, the District Court began numbering divorce case files separately from other civil proceedings beginning with number one.

A fire at the court house destroyed some of the early case files from the time period covering 1890-1917. Some names for which files no longer exist were added to the index from court dockets. A few others were added from newspaper records of divorces. These additions are noted in the index. It was not possible to recreat all of the missing files.

These divorce records are organized into three series by time period. There is a a comprehensive index which covers all three series and there are separate indexes for each time period, ie., 1890-1917, 1918-1934 and 1935-1950.
