Our Young’s
Our family are the descendants of Sarah Young (maiden name unknown) 1793-1875 born in Clare Ireland and died in Nepean, Ottawa-Carleton, Ontario. Levi Young’s family tree says that the Young’s came from Mountshannon, Galway/Clare, Ireland.
George Young family of Pontiac Quebec
Sarah’s son, Michael Young 1823-1907, came to Canada with in 1833 with his uncle and I believe that the uncle was George Young 1788-1862. DNA matches show that we are related to many of George Young’s descendants and supports the uncle relationship.
Young’s from Mountshannon
Two more Young ancestors of DNA matches came from Mountshannon and are probably cousin of Michael Young.
Because George Young 1803-1890 and Ellen Young Gunning 1822-1906 and families travelled from Ireland to Canada together, I am assuming that they are related and probably siblings. Both did settle at Frontenac and Hastings near Kingston Ontario, although the Gunning's later moved to Toronto.
Young’s from County Kerry
There are 2 Young families from County Kerry where we have many DNA matches.
One is Eliza Young Griffin 1813-1867 who came to Halton Ontario and the other is Eliza’s nephew George Young 1835-1900 who went to Chicago. I don’t know how this family connects to our Young’s, but I think that Eliza’s father or grandfather must have come from the Mountshannon area.
Possibly connected, but with only 1 DNA match with a descendant of Bartholomew Griffin 1815 of Tarbert Kerry Ireland.
Young’s in Ottawa/Pontiac
Many years ago, I studied the family of John Young 1782-1860 and Frances Goodwin 1790-1870 who came from Ireland to Ottawa and then Pontiac Quebec. I have discovered many DNA matches with descendants and I am thinking that John is probably a brother to George Young and an uncle to my Michael Young.
There are DNA matches with a few descendants of James Hayes Young 1825-1912. His mother’s parents came to Canada in 1818 with the Talbot Party aboard the ship Brunswick. The father of James was supposedly William Young 1818-1888 who could possibly be a nephew of George Young 1788-1862.
William Young 1926-2004
William Young came from Limerick to Mississauga and we have DNA matches with his son Albert Thomas Young.
Palatine Young’s of Rathkeale Limerick
There are DNA matches with 2 descendants of Andrew Young 1765-1859 of Rathkeale Limerick to Renfrew Ontario.
Another descendant, Sarah Black 1865-1951 married Robert Robinson Serson.
Young’s of Tipperary
There are DNA matches with 2 descendants of James Young 1800-1891 & Margaret Sparling 1805-1873 from Tipperary to Huron Ontario. There are matches with an additional descendant of Margaret’s brother Christopher Peter Spaling 1793-1862 of Tipperary to Peel Ontario.
There is 1 DNA match with 1 descendant of Thomas Young 1795-1855 from Rusheen Borrisoleigh Tipperary to Kingsmere Gatineau Quebec.
Hodgins
The unconnected family where we have the most DNA matches is with the descendants of Robert Hodgins 1695-1750 of Nenagh Tipperary. There are also a number of unconnected Hodgins families where there are DNA matches and I assume that they are somehow connected to each other and to our family. Most in this family went to London Ontario, but some came to the Ottawa area which matches the North Tipperary migration pattern described in Dr. Bruce Elliott’s book “Irish Migrants in the Canadas”. The DNA matches with this family are so numerous that I no longer bother to investigate and track new ones.
Taylor
We have DNA matches with many descendants of Jeremiah Taylor 1757-1817 of Castletown Tipperary and of Ogonnelloe and Moynoe Clare.
There are many matches with his son Joseph Taylor 1798-1890 and daughter Elizabeth Taylor Rutledge Mooney 1791-1896 who came to Pontiac Quebec.
There are many matches with his son Walter Taylor 1807-1871 and daughter Anne Taylor Fuller 1803-1890 who went to New Zealand.
One descendant of Jeremiah Taylor 1795-1891 who went to Australia.
Durack/Forde
Patrick Durack 1794-1857 was convicted of attempted murder of Mountshannon landlord, Philip Reade, and banished to Australia. His brother Jack Durack 1786-1829 stayed in Ireland but many of his children went to Australia. We have many DNA matches with descendants of Jack Durack, but I think that we are related to his wife Amy Forde 1780. I believe this because we have DNA matches with one unconnected Mountshannon Ford descendant and no matches with descendants of Patrick Durack.
- There are many Australian DNA matches between descendants of Amy Forde and Jack Durack 1786-1829
- Keven Coan of New York, descendant of Sarah Durack Coan
- Diana Gallagher-Roy of Toronto GG Granddaughter of Honora Anne Allen 1833-1887 daughter of Patrick and Catherine Durack 1802-1864
Broderick/Broadrick
- Anne Margaret Kovarik and her father, John Kovarik of Maryland, Grandson of John Broderick 1864-1936 born Scariff near Mountshannon son of John Broderick 1814-1901 & Margaret Brogan 1841-1907
- John Broadrick Great Grandson of Timothy Broderick 1834-1904 & Mary Cooney 1832-1865 of Broadford County Clare to Australia.
Curley
Lake Curley in Pontiac Quebec is named for this family. We have DNA matches with many descendants of Matthew Curley 1785 (including Lawrence Curley 1807-1899 & Bridget Farrell 1817-1880) of Clare Ireland. Descendants came from Clare Ireland to Pontiac Quebec and Northern Ontario and then onto other places in Canada and the USA.
McNamara
There are 3 DNA matches with 2 cousin descendants of Patrick McNamara 1858-1933 born Scarriff Clare and went to New Zealand.
There are DNA matches with 2 descendants of Thomas McNamara 1800-1899 born Clare and went to Australia.
Shouldice
There are DNA matches with many descendants of Leonard Shouldice 1732-1880 of Castletownarra Tipperary which is across Lough Derg from Mountshannon. Shouldice is a German Palatine name and the family is probably part of the 1709 migration to Ireland concentrated around Rathkeale Limerick. Leonard’s son Nicholas Shouldice came to Ottawa and was with the 1818 Talbot Party aboard the ship Brunswick. Leonard’s grandson Patrick Corbett also came to Ottawa and was with the 1818 Talbot Party aboard the ship Brunswick.
Sammon/Salmon (Geary)
There are DNA matches with 3 sibling;
- Joseph Sammon 1777 of Ireland
- Richard Sammon 1774 of Clare Ireland
- Mary Sammon Minogue 1775 of Clare Ireland
Descendants lived in Ireland, Chicago, Michigan and Australia
There are matches with 3 descendants of Helen Sammon Fahey 1898-1977 from Clare Ireland to Connecticut, daughter of Joseph Sammon 1869-1942 of Mountshannon Clare.
There are matches with 3 descendants of Mary Anne Sammon Kinney 1866-1946 from Mountshannon Clare to Wisconsin.
There are matches with 1 descendant of Mary Sammon O’Brien 1864-1931 of Scarriff Clare Ireland where her son came to New York.
There are matches with 1 descendant of Bridget Sammon Pringle 1868-1945 from Mountshannon Clare to New Zealand.
There are many matches with 1 descendant of Richard Sammon 1837-1906 of Galway probably Mountshannon to Australia.
Clarke
There are DNA matches with a few descendants of Robert Clarke 1755-1819 of Cloonoolia, Clonrush, Mountshannon who went to Australia.
McMahon
There are DNA matches with 2 descendants of John McMahon 1843-1899 from Clare Ireland to Minnesota.
There are DNA matches with 3 descendants of Bridget McMahon Ryan 1830-1912 from Clare Ireland to Minnesotta.
Abbott
There are DNA matches with many descendants of John Abbott 1755-1825 son of William Abbott 1738-1769 and Mary Goulding 1739-1770 of Offaly/King’s County whose families came to Ottawa Canada and Australia. My ancestor Sarah Young is found in the 1871 census in the home of descendant Jane Abbott Butler 1840-1910 remarried widow of William Young 1833-1867 (son of 1818 Talbot Party members Robert Young & Sarah Colbert where no other connection with our family has been found).
Talbot
There is a large Talbot family connected to the Barons of Malahide castle near Dublin Ireland. Fitzgerald’s and Howard’s are connected to this family. There are many Talbot’s in Ireland and it is not known how they are all related.
There are DNA matches with 5 descendants of John Talbot 1622-1672 of Cloughjordan Tipperary including 2 descendants of Richard Talbot 1773-1843 organizer of the Talbot Party that came to Canada on the ship Brunswick in 1818.
There are DNA matches with 5 descendants of William Edward Talbot 1744-1817 of Cloyne Tipperary.
There are DNA matches with 4 descendants of Sir Robert Talbot 1609-1670 2nd Baron of Carton of Kildare Ireland.
Goulding
There are DNA matches with 5 descendants of James Goulding 1755-1823 of Moneygall Offaly including descendants of his son Charles Goulding 1780-1854 with the Talbot Party on the ship Brunswick 1818.

There are DNA matches with 4 descendants of Charles Sifton 1752-1842 of Templederry, Tipperary.
Hayes
There are DNA matches with 6 descendants of William Hayes 1798-1831 of Offaly/King’s County who came to Ottawa Carleton.
Shoebottom
There are DNA matches with 2 descendants of William Shoebottom 1756-1830 and with 5 descendants of his brother John Shoebottom 1753-1838. Both families went to London Ontario. John’s daughter Ann Shoebottom Boulding 1797-1880 was with the Talbot Party on the ship Brunswick 1818.
Gunning
There are DNA matches with 8 descendants of Ann Gunning Eades 1813-1857 from Ireland to Pontiac Quebec.
There are DNA matches with 5 descendants of Annie Bloxham Gunning Rooney 1825 from Mountshannon Clare to Austalia, New Zealand, and New York.
Sheedy
There are DNA matches with 3 descendants of Daniel Sheedy of Tuamgraney, Clare near Mountshannon who went to Renfrew Ontario neighboring Ottawa Carleton.
Coyne
DNA matches with 4 descendants. From Galway, Ireland, siblings Patrick Coyne 1830-1895 came to Illinois and Annie Coyne Egan 1835 came to New York.
DNA matches with 3 descendants. From Ireland, Bernard Coyne 1830-1891 came to Ontario and then Michigan.
Stanley O’Neil Rivington/Remington
The many DNA matches with Rivington’s, Stanley’s and O’Neil’s is possibly due to my Serson ancestors.
Document Records
I have never been able to find any Irish records that identify a known Young ancestor, but there are records of Young’s at Mountshannon and I assume that they are related to us.
