John Thomas Bonser was born on the 8th of August 1845, in Rempstone, Nottinghamshire, to William Bonser and Mary Ann Robinson. He joined the Royal Navy on his 14th birthday in August 1859. He was described as having blue eyes, fair complexion, light hair and 4 foot 9". He served in the Navy until 1873.
In 1876, he married Eliza Atterbury, at Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire. They had a son William in 1877 who sadly died in infancy.
In 1881, the family lived at Ring Cottage, Vicarage Road, Stony Stratford. They had one daughter Charlotte, born 1880. John was working as an attendant of the dining hall at the Wolverton Works.
The Wolverton Railway Works was established in 1838 as a midway point on the London to Birmingham line, as it was considered scientifically unsafe at the time for railway locomotives to move more than 50 miles (80 km) without further inspection. After surveying all possible sites, Wolverton was chosen. John worked as an attendant for many years.
They had a daughter Mary in 1881, she was followes by Jane in 1882. Unfortunately, Jane died a few months after the birth.
The family remained at Ring Cottage the rest of their lives. John passed away on the 13th of March 1924, aged 78.
"Death of Mr. John Bonser. The death has occurred of Mr. John Bonser. at the age of 78 years. Mr. Bonser was for many years in charge of the Dining hall Wolverton Works, where he was very popular."
Unbelievably, his wife passed away the next day on the 14th of March 1924, aged 77.
