George Tucker II

armiger, Freeman

(1560 - 1625)

Born in 1560. He studied law at the Inner Temple in London, and was a ‘Freeman’ of Gravesend.17c Lived at Milton Next, Kent County, England. Married first to Elizabeth Stoughton, in 1592.18 She was the daughter of Francis and Agnes (???) Stoughton of Crayford, Kent County, England; second to Mary Darrell (see Darrell family history). Elizabeth died 10 August 1597, at Milton Next, Kent County, England, three months after giving birth to her daughter Esther.

At St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church, located at Milton-next-Gravesend, was erected between 1323 - 1377, under the patronage of the Countess of Pembroke. On large parchments, bound in leather with brass corners:19

“Marche 1601 - Elizabeth ye daughter of Geo-

rge Tucker was baptized on ye five and twenty

day.”

“Marche 1602 - Maria ye daughter of George

Tucker Gent was baptized on ye four and twenty

day.”

“1604 - Robert ye sonne of George Tucker Gent

one of the Burghers at this font was baptized ye

VII of June.”

Additional children are found in the years 1599 and 1612.

The Manor of Milton was not purchased by George II until 29 November 1609:

“A grant to George Tucker, Esq. and his heirs

in fee simple of the Manor of Milton in the

County of Kent of the yearly value of £41-7-2

(at the humble petition of William Garwey,

Francis Jones, and others in part satisfation

of £60,000 delivered by them for His Maj-

esties use) namely in full payment of £1654-

6-8 at 40 years purchase subscribed by the

Lord Treasurer and Sir Julius Caesar and Sir

Thomas Lake.”

The farmers of the great farm of the Customs produced £60,000 not only once, but later a second time. In the value of 1969 currency that amounted to £2,400,000. 18 The Garwey family were members of the East India Company, and it was they who first advertised the use of tea as a drink in 1658.

George was a member of the Warwick Party in the Virginia Company.20 19 In 1609 King James I conveyed Milton Manor to George.

The second charter for the Virginia Company of London was granted by King James I on 23 May 1609, Daniel Tucker was on that list, and that of his brother George II’s name is listed on the third charter. In the beginning Bermuda was called the “Plantacon of the Somer Islands,” more commonly known as “The Bermuda Company.” The Tucker brothers held shares in this company of 117 noblemen and merchants. Daniel had four shares in the Warwick Tribe (tribe is used instead of parish)and the same in the Southhampton Tribe.20a George had ten shares in Warwick Tribe. George acquired a large amount of land on the island of Bermuda, where he gave the land for St. Anne’s Parish church to be built at Port Royal.

Daniel was made the first Governor of the second charter in 1616, and is remembered as a very driven man. He had constant conflicts with the colonists over planting crops, building the community, etc. He did much for the survival of the people on the island. But when he left in 1619 to return to England on the vessel ‘The Blessing,’ the colonists were over joyed.

The island has many Tucker attractions: In St. George Tribe (county/parish) there is the Tucker House, and in the Castle Harbor area is Tucker Town. Southhampton is associated with St. Anne’s Parish, where many early Tucker records can be found. It was here that Governor Daniel built his mansion.

George Tucker II died 26 December 1625, at Milton Next, England.
