Focus is on the ancestors and descendants of William Strother I (ca. 1630-1702), who emigrated from Northumberland, England ca. 1650 and settled in Millbank, Virginia. Millbank is in Sittenborne Parish on the Rappahannock River, in Old Rappahannock County, later known as Richmond County, and is now known as King George County. Millbank is near the present-day Port Conway. Around 1651, William married Dorothy Savage, the daughter of Captain Anthony Savage, ca. 1651. Their children were William II, James, Jeremiah, Robert, Benjamin, and Joseph. Many descendants remained in the Rappahannock River area of Virginia, near Fredericksburg. In the 1700's, other Strothers settled in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. During the 1800's, some moved to Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Washington D.C. Later descendants also lived in Luxembourg, and in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming, and elsewhere.

Variant spellings may include Straather, Straddor, Strather, Stratherne, Strathor, Strauther, Strawther, Strouder, Strowder, and others.
