The index to the estate files is divided into two major chronological listings, 1830-1975 and 1976-Sept. 1996. Within the two listings, the names are arranged in general alphabetical groups depending (for the most part) on the first two or three letters of the surname. The names are then arranged chronologically within the general alphabetical groups. There is a separate listing of names whose files are filmed but are not found in the index for the years, 1831-1930. The estate files are arranged by the year the estate was probated and then they are arranged alphabetically within each year. They are not listed by file number, so the only information needed from the index is the year of probate.
