Volume 1 is based on research into contemporary newspapers, government records, and a small number of published sources, on both sides of the Atlantic. Vol. 2 is largely based on the Exchequer records in the National Archives of Scotland which identify vessels, skippers, and cargoes on which duties or bounties were charged or given. Also newspapers have been scrutinised to augment the aforementioned Exchequer data. Vol. 3 differs from the earlier volumes in that it includes a number of vessels bound from Scotland to the West Indies dating from 1611. It also includes a number of early return journeys from American where the record of the outward voyage has not survived.
