"This microfilm reproduces the volumes of field notes from original surveys of six states whose field notes are located in The National Archives as of the date of filming (1979). The states are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Ohio. Similar field notes relating to other states remain in the possession of the Bureau of Land Management (successor to the General Land Office) and are not included here. Township plats accompanying these field notes are in the National Archives"--Introd.

"On the index maps provided, all the numbers shown, large and small, refer only to volume numbers (not page numbers). Most volumes include individual indexes linking townships and page numbers; these individual indexes are located often at the end, but sometimes at the beginning, on each volume"--Introd.

"Manuscript copies of field notes from township surveys in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Ohio. These notes were copied from and compared with the original field notes and approved by the Surveyor General for the state or territory represented. The manuscript plats for these states relate directly to these field notes. In addition to a detailed description on running the township and section lines, the notes include much descriptive information about topography, natural vegetation, and potential uses of the land. Bound in volumes and arranged by state and thereunder by volume number. Index maps for each state locate the numbered volumes for each township"--Introd.
