About family group trees

Share

Family group trees are now available for everyone. You no longer need to go to FamilySearch Labs to try it out. If you were one of our early users, thank you for your time and feedback.

What stays the same

As you work in Family Tree, you'll see that most features work exactly the same as before. Fonts, colors, font sizes, contrast, and dark mode also remain the same.

What Is New or Changed

Share a tree containing living people: With family group trees, you can share the portion of your tree that contains living people with living family members. Everyone sees the same tree.

Add a family group tree to your existing family groups or create a new group with a tree: If you already have a family group, you can turn on the option to share a family group tree. If you do not have a family group, you can create a new one that has a family group tree from the start.

Manage family groups: Upgraded family group management features let you add a family group tree for your group, see tree details, view a feed of group activities, and set starting people. You can still name the group, add a photo, chat with the group, and perform all other group management. To accommodate all the new features, the screen has been expanded and the features rearranged.

Navigate between a group tree and the group: You can easily go between the family group tree and the family group that has access to it.

Easily switch between trees: You can easily tell which tree you are in and switch between trees using the new tree selector, which is located in the upper-left side of the Family Tree.

Limit memories to a family group: You can upload memories and limit the visibility of them to the family group.

Portrait view: The new Portrait view is especially helpful for seeing your extended family in a family group tree.

Private People list: The Private People list has become more powerful and consequently has moved from My Contributions to the Family Tree navigation menu. The list now contains living people in both your private trees and family group trees and identifies possible duplicates within the same tree. You will also find options that let you copy people in your private list into a family group tree or your private tree.

Follow living: You can now follow the living people in a family group tree and have them appear on your following list.
