About the updated family group management features

Share

The family groups feature has been updated to let your family work together in a family group tree.

What stays the same

Groups still need administrators
We recommend each group have at least 2 and up to 3 administrators, who fill important roles in their group:

  • Serve as the group's helpers.
  • Grant administration rights to others.
  • Manage group membership.
  • Turn on the options for the group.
  • Set the group details (photo, name, description, code of conduct).
  • Create an initial family group tree (if desired).

Group chat
Group members can still collaborate in a group chat.

What is new or different

Family group trees
Groups can now share a family group tree, which allows them to share a tree containing their living family members.

Select a preferred tree
You can now choose a preferred tree. This tree shows up by default when you open Family Tree and is used when calculating relationships between you and a person in Family Tree or another user.

Invite process
The process for inviting group members is almost the same as it was. The only change is that if a family group has a family group tree, everyone who joins the group must be in the tree first.

During the early access testing, we experimented with requiring administrators to send each new group member a unique invitation link. We received feedback that this was overly complicated and reverted back to the original process.

Family feed
A new family feed allows you to post messages for the group.
