What Does Your Name Mean? Discover the Origin of Your Name

What does my name mean? How common is my name? If you’ve ever found yourself asking these questions, then you are in luck. Using FamilySearch’s All about Me experience, you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about your name.

What Will This Experience Show Me?

Our names are our lifelong companions—inked onto our birth certificates, etched into our tombstones, and ultimately written in the hearts of our loved ones long after we are gone. With all that being said, it is only natural to wonder what our names mean and who shares them with us.

To learn more about your name, all you have to do is enter your information into our guest experience or sign in to your FamilySearch account.

First and Last Name Meaning

Discover what your name means, including its original form, a short history of its use, spelling variations, and pet forms. Click your last name to learn more about its origin and meaning as well.

    1. After you sign in to FamilySearch, there is a section in the top right corner that says “Family History Activities”. Click on that section and it will take you to the different activities available. This one in particular is called “All About Me”. Hope this helps!

  1. I tried to use the About Me feature and found it not very user friendly. Logged into my account and was taken to a blank “All About Me” page . Was unable to enter any information. Bummer!

    1. I am so sorry that you’ve had a bad experience with it! I would love to help you figure this out. Have you tried using a different browser or opening the activity up using your Family Tree mobile app? Sometimes the experience works better if your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox etc.) is updated. Let me know if you are still having problems or if you need help navigating to the activity using the mobile app.

    1. Barbara, thanks for reaching out! I would check your settings on your account to see what your display name is. You can do this by clicking the name in the top right corner of the homepage. Click on settings and it will take you to a form where you can change your display name. Hope it helps!

  2. I liked learning some facts about my name and things that happened around my birth year. I would like to check out my maiden name. Is there a way to do that?

    1. I’m so glad you liked the experience! Try signing in as a guest and inputting your maiden name instead of your married name.
