You saw the Royal Wedding, but are you related to Princess Kate?
A new book, The Ancestry of Catherine Middleton, recently published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, traces the pedigree of the future Queen back as many as fifteen generations. The late William Addams Reitwiesner (an employee at the Library of Congress) compiled the book, with assistance from many other respected genealogists including Christopher Challender Child and Scott Campbell Steward (both staff at the New England Historic Genealogical Society) and Jason Harrison (United States and Canada Research Consultant at the Family History Library).
Kate’s father’s family includes royalty, while her mother’s line springs from the coal pits of County Durham. Most of her ancestors lived in the North of England, but there was also a smattering of French Huguenots.
In addition to Kate’s ancestors, readers learn how she relates to European royalty and American colonists, as well as notable Americans including President George Washington, Explorer Meriwether Lewis, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, General George S. Patton and many others.
Ancestral surnames include: Ablett, Allan, Alloway, Arey, Ashford, Asquith, Atkinson, Barwick, Beckett, Bell, Billingsby, Bird, Bowler, Burniston, Cellson, Chandler, Cole, Coventry, Dale, Darnton, Davenport, Davis, Dixon, Dorsett, Douglas, Dunn, Elliott, Fairfax, Finch, Gee, Germany, Gibbons, Glassborow, Golden, Goldsmith, Grapes, Greenhow, Hall, Harrison, Harvey, Heslop, Higson, Hill, Hobbes, Hughes, Hutton, Jenkins, Jones, Joyner, Kitteredge, Liddell, Lister, Lowen, Lumbe, Lupton, Mackerell, Marshall, Martineau, Matthews, Meadows, Middleton, Midgeley, Montague, Muir, Myers, Newbigging, Park, Peacock, Pierre, Powditch, Powell, Proud, Rankin, Rider, Robison, Rose, Sladen, Smith, Stable, Stafford, Stephenson, Stone, Swailes, Temple, Ward, Watson, Webster, Weir, Wheeler, White, Woods, and Woodward.
“Prominent UK genealogists refer the public to this book as the definitive account of Kate’s ancestry,” says Nathan W. Murphy, AG, a United States and Canada Research Consultant at the Family History Library, who just returned from a trip to London.
