If you don’t have a strategy to follow, analyzing old family photographs can be a long, tedious, and sometimes frustrating process. However, with a little information and close examination, family photographs can lead to discovering new information about your ancestors. In her presentation at RootsTech 2016, photo historian Maureen Taylor shared five important steps that will help you take a photo from unknown to part of your family story:
- Study the clues in the picture.
- Unravel the caption.
- Connect to cousins using social media.
- Research the clues.
- Spread the word.
“Family photos are powerful,” said Taylor. “Each one of your family photographs tells a story, and each one of your family photographs can be just as powerful to you and to your family history.”

I am having trouble accessing this video. Could you help?
It is just audio. The play button seems to be missing but if you click where it should be, you will be able to listen.
Really Wish this were video. She is talking about things on a screen, of which I cannot see.
There is video of the presentation here: https://www.rootstech.org/videos/maureen-taylor
FWIW, I can’t get the audio to play either.
You can start the audio recording by clicking the black area to the immediate left of the “00:00” on the far left end of the audio strip recording.
Does anyone know what software was used to add captions to the photos shown in the “Quick Start Video” header?
The audio doesn’t work!
This is fantastic and extrememly interesting but frustrating not being able to see the photos discussed. I don’t suppose Maureeen could include the photos discussed in this blog. Or at least a couple of them.

Something is wrong with this. There’s nothing to click on to hear audio.
The audio player has some quirks, for sure. Click to the left where the play button should be and it will work.
I’d rather read a transcript than hear this voice.
