  1. We are trying to set up our Stake Indexing Program in the Emmett Idaho Stake here in Emmett, Idaho. My wife, Gail, and I were called to be the Stake Indexing Coordinators and we are trying to set up our Indexing Program according to the Church instructions.

    We have had a program for many years, but unfortunately, not much has happened in the Stake other than encouragement to, “Do Indexing.”

    I decided to look into the Church Handbook 2. Section 5.4 is about Temple and Family History Work. In section 5.4 there is one short section about indexing. Section is about the Family Search Indexing Program in the Stake.

    Therein it states, and this is the principle part pf the instruction, “the stake presidency may determine that it would be beneficial for stake members to work together in an indexing program. Such an effort can provide service opportunities for members who are less active or home-bound. Youth may also participate.”

    We want such a program in our stake, but also want to organize it according to the Church instruction. The last paragraph, following the statement above states, “For information on establishing a Family Search indexing program, see the Administrative Guide for Family History, which is available on”

    So, I looked on for that Guide and could not find it.

    It was called “Administrative Guide for Family History (04397)”,” and supposedly contained information about how to organize the Stake Indexing program. But it cannot be found on the Church site.

    It is listed in a list of document and manuals in the Distribution Services, so I called them at 1-800-537-5971. The worker there informed me that the publication, “Administrative Guide for Family History (04397),” has been discontinued and no longer available, though it is still listed and referred to several times in Handbook 2.

    So, our question remains, is there a suggested method or ideas for organizing the Stake Indexing Program?

    We had in mind to ask our Bishops, in working with their Elders Quorum Presidents to call “Temple and Family History Consultants – Indexer,” and try and call 2-4 such individuals, perhaps with a retired couple and a couple of youth to be involved at the Ward level. We also thought that there could be one of them, or a separate individual called in each ward as the “Temple and Family History Indexing Lead,” who would work with the Ward Temple and Family History Lead,”at the Ward Level, reporting on how the program is going and helping recommend those to be called to be indexers within the war, and who would also and with us as Stake Coordinators to help train them on indexing, and help set goals for their wards and the stake, and to find Indexing Projects that we as a Stake could become involved with.

    For example, the 1950 census will be coming out in 2022 and I am sure there will be indexing opportunities for it between now and then.. Or, we could go through our local grave sites and make sure every name in the site was indexed. Or other Indexing Programs listed on the Web Indexing site.

    But we do not want to do something that is not in keeping with, or would be at odds with what the Church Leadership would have us do.

    Is there any official direction on ideas on seting up our indexing program at the Stake Level?

    My wife and I have a testimony of the great need for it. Without emphasis and encouragement, members begin to think that indexing is complete and there is not as much need for it. We know that this is not the case. All the research on the computer we do for our kindred dead is based on indexing, and will continue to be so.

    I have background before I had to take a medical retirement due to incurable cancer, through my engineering career in digitizing older engineering records so they could be used by modern Computer-aided-Engineering and Design programs. Which is essentially the same idea applied to engineering to make sure designs of older generations are available to engineers today for research, study, and using to help with modern designs.

    The indexing work we do now, provides virtually all of the really exciting material available to people doing research for their kindred dead through indexed censuses, indexed grave sites, indexed birth and death certificates, draft cards, obituaries, family histories, and the list goes on and on.

    We want our stake program to add as significantly as possible to the data that is available for Temple and Family History Consultants and Researchers who are finding their relatives, documenting them, and then getting them onto Family Search for their saving ordinance work.
