The Family History Library collection includes Virginia taxation records. When searching for these records in the Family History Library Catalog, be aware of the following:
- Many resources for Virginia counties are cataloged at the state level, i.e. “Virginia,” in the Family History Library Catalog, and beginners may not be aware they should conduct a “Place Search” for the state in addition to searching for a specific county.
- Periodicals are listed by title in the Family History Library Catalog, but the contents of individual articles are not identified.
Allen County Public Library’s staff has solved the periodicals problem by cataloging the contents of articles found in genealogical periodicals through the Periodical Source Index (PERSI). Heritage Quest Online’s version of PERSI enables users to sift out references to journal articles that pertain to specific counties and record types, such as “Loudoun County, Virginia,” and “Taxation,” no matter where they were published. The periodical collections at the Family History Library and the Allen County Public Library libraries are similar, making PERSI a valuable key for unlocking the Family History Library’s hidden collections. These expanded listings have been added to the dynamic Virginia county pages at FamilySearch Wiki.
FamilySearch Wiki is quickly becoming a second “starting point,” enhancing the Family History Library Catalog, for conducting research at the Family History Library. The Wiki can unlock hidden treasures in the Library’s collection.
