Free Guide to Hampshire England Ancestors

April 25, 2014  - by

FamilySearch is pleased to announce a new online guide to tracing ancestors in the ceremonial County of Hampshire England. Also known as Southampton, and including the Isle of Wight, Hampshire has a long maritime history. It is the birthplace of the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force. The Isle of Wight is a short and enjoyable hovercraft ferry ride away from the mainland. The guide has been published in the FamilySearch Research Wiki.

Features include articles on each of Hampshire’s 400+ Anglican parishes loaded with descriptions of records available online at major websites Ancestry.co.uk, FamilyRelatives, FamilySearch.org, FindMyPast.co.uk, FreeReg, TheGenealogist.co.uk, GENUKI, Google Books, Internet Archive, The Joiner Marriage Index, and The Parish Register Transcription Society.

Most Hampshire parish registers are now available online, if you know where to look for them. The guide includes the ancient city of Winchester, once England’s capital, including information about Cathedral records and Winchester’s dozen parish churches. Genealogists will find tables describing where to find parish registers online, maps to pinpoint places Hampshire ancestors lived, find wills, and find and use major Hampshire archives and libraries, such as the Hampshire Archives and Local Studies, The National Archives, and the Society of Genealogists Library.

Here’s an example of what you’ll find on a parish page:

  1. Come on guys! Hampshire is also known as Southampton? Err no actually! And it’s Isle of Wight not Isle of the Wight. Does anyone check this stuff? Do you need a British editor?
