Free Guide to Cornwall England Ancestors

February 17, 2014  - by

FamilySearch is pleased to announce a new online guide to tracing ancestors in the ceremonial County of Cornwall England. England’s westernmost tip: Land’s End (featured to the left), Cornish pasties, tin mining, fishing, and Celtic heritage provide vivid images of Cornwall. The guide has been published in the FamilySearch Research Wiki.

Features include articles on each of Cornwall’s 350+ Anglican parishes loaded with descriptions of records available online at major websites Ancestry.co.uk, Cornwall Online Parish Clerks, Cornwall Parish Register Index, FamilyRelativesFamilySearch.org, FindMyPast.co.uk, FreeRegTheGenealogist.co.uk, Google Books, and Internet Archive.

Most Cornish parish registers are now available online, if you know where to look for them. Genealogists will find tables describing where to find parish registers online, maps to pinpoint places Cornish ancestors lived, and learn how to find and use major Cornwall archives and libraries, such as the Cornwall Record Office, The National Archives, and the Society of Genealogists Library.

Here’s an example of what you’ll find on a parish page:

Tip

If you’re having a difficult time remembering how to get back to your parish’s guide, try Google. Google the name of your ancestor’s parish + genealogy or parish registers, etc. and you should see FamilySearch’s  guide appear as one of the top results.

  1. Am looking for any relatives related to the following people:
Grandfather Edmund Hill, born 11/1/1883 in St. Cleer, Cornwall, England. His father was Edmund Hill, born about 1850 in Saint Ewe, Cornwall, England. His mother was Matilda Harris, born 1858 in Saint Cleer, Cornwall, England and it appears she died in December 1883, which would have been one month after my grandfather was born. Looking for any relatives in Cornwall that are still living.

    1. Hello I trying to get DNA for the 6 or 7 Cornish Hill family’s in 1800

My family may have come from that area 1790s

  2. Nathan:
I have invited (and encouraged) the Online Parish Clerks belonging to the Cornwall OPC organization to contribute additional information on “their” parishes, expanding what is there with local knowledge that may be of interest and help to those searching in those parishes. I would cite what Julia Mosman did for St Austell, Treverbyn, and Charlestown as great examples of what can be added by those who are intimately acquainted with specific parishes. I do not know what the response will be, as they have already put much of that on the OPC parish pages and may choose not to duplicate their efforts. Some years ago, I did add to the pages for Cardinham, St Winnow, and Warleggan.

  3. I am researching the family descendants of Mary Olivee (born 1762 in St Just in Roseland, I think). Could you please help?
