Perhaps you’ve already explored the Memories available on FamilySearch.org, which are found by clicking one of the tabs at the top of the main page. You can see the options it offers for storing photos, documents, stories, and audio clips. But did you know that there’s a mobile app that makes adding your family’s memories to FamilySearch.org easier and more convenient than ever?
To download the free Memories app, go to FamilySearch.org/mobile/memories. Once you’ve installed it on your phone, you’re ready to get going!
When you open the app, you will see three icons—one for photos, one for stories, and one for audio. To try these activities, tap one of the three icons, and then in the upper right corner of the app, tap the plus sign to add an item in that category.
1. Photos. You can choose from photos already on your phone, or you can take new photos. Once you have a photo up on your screen, add a title or tag people from your tree. Tagging someone will link the photo to that person on the tree. The new photos will also show up in your FamilySearch Memories Gallery.
2. Stories. Type a family story directly into your phone. You can even attach a photo to go with it if you’d like. Tag people who the story is about to attach it to their record on the tree.
3) Audio. Simply tap the plus icon and then Begin Recording to record a family story, memory, piece of advice or joke. Try to keep the clips under five minutes so they will be easy to listen to (although recordings can be longer). Once again, identify who the audio clip is about to connect it to that person in the tree.
One of the great things about the Memories app is that as long as you’re connected to the Internet, it instantly and automatically adds the new information to FamilySearch.org. If you aren’t connected to the Internet, the changes will be added the next time you connect.
Being able to do these tasks from your phone adds a new level of flexibility to preserving your family’s memories. So why not give it a try? At the next family dinner, record Grandma’s story about meeting Grandpa for the first time so future generations can hear it too. Snap some photos at the upcoming graduation or other milestone, and upload them to the tree to make them part of your family’s shared experiences forever. In just a few moments, you can ensure that those important memories in your family are never lost.
