Last year, over 1.7 million people came together to light the world during the month of December, sharing stories of faith, service, and love. This year, #LightTheWorld is back with 25 new ways to share the Savior’s light with everyone around you.
Each day in December, comeuntochrist.org will feature one of the Savior’s teachings along with ideas to help you put that teaching into practice. There are no rules about what you should do to participate or how to do it. Simply read the scripture associated with each day, ponder how you can live that teaching, and then take action.
The service that you do can truly bring light to the lives of those around you, especially your family and loved ones. But you can bring light to your ancestors and the lives that they lived as well.
Here are a few ideas to make family history part of your efforts to light the world this Christmas season. For even more ideas, revisit some of our suggestions from last year.
Friday, December 1
“Freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
If you’ve done any amount of family history research, chances are you’ve searched for historic records containing information about your ancestors. Those online records are easy to access and search through because someone took the time to index them.
Through the efforts of hundreds of thousands of selfless volunteers, FamilySearch indexing has made more than a billion records easily searchable online, but there are still billions more waiting to be indexed. Indexing is an easy way to give a little bit of your time to make a big difference in helping people find their families.
How you can light the world: Take some time to index a batch today, or gather with friends or family to index together.
Sunday, December 3
“Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days” (Matthew 12:12).
“We’ve been asked to make the Sabbath a delight,” said Elder Ian S. Ardern in the 2017 RootsTech conference. “That’s a prophetic call, and surely doing family history is one of the better ways of making the Sabbath a delight.”
There are plenty of simple family history activities that can invite the Spirit into your home each Sunday. Whether you’re uploading family photos to your Memories gallery, researching your ancestors and sharing their stories of faith, or interviewing living relatives to preserve their life stories, take a few minutes today to celebrate your family history.
Tuesday, December 5
“Honour thy father and mother” (Matthew 15:4).
Family history is all about turning our hearts to our fathers, remembering those who came before us, and honoring their memories. One of the best ways you can honor your ancestors is by telling their stories. These stories can play a key role in connecting us and strengthening our families and homes.
How you can light the world: Share memories of your parents or other relatives by uploading photos or stories to your Memories gallery on FamilySearch.
Sunday, December 17
“Ye shall meet together oft” (3 Nephi 18:22).
Family gatherings strengthen our shared ties as we meet with loved ones and create special memories together. The holidays are often a great time to gather together with your family members and share your love for each other, but this doesn’t have to mean an elaborate holiday party or extensive planning; you can light your family’s lives with something as simple as a quick 15-minute visit or phone call.
Wednesday, December 20
“A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15).
Our lives are much more than the titles we hold or the possessions we own. What are the most meaningful parts of your life? What would you want your descendants to know about you? You can act today to share your most significant life experiences with your family and preserve them for future generations. Whether you document your life in a journal, through photos, or with voice recordings, your story matters. Check out #52Stories for prompts and ideas to help you get started.
How you can light the world: Choose one prompt from #52Stories to answer today. Record your answer in a journal, online, or in an audio recording.
