      Caribbean Genetic Genealogy

Caribbean family history research can be overwhelming—records are often scarce, endogamy is common, and complex admixture can obscure DNA match lists. In this practical, tool-focused session, you’ll learn the basics of how to untangle endogamous clusters, identify meaningful matches, and use admixture results to guide your personal research. We’ll cover tools helpful for endogamous populations, strategies for finding unindexed or hard-to-access sources, and ways to navigate gaps in documentation. While the session will highlight research in Puerto Rico, the approaches shared will benefit anyone pursuing island-based family history.

Unveiling Hidden Branches: A Genetic Study of George Washington’s Extended Family Tree

This presentation provides an in-depth look at the groundbreaking genetic research that identified unmarked graves at the historic Harewood plantation, home of President George Washington's brother, Colonel Samuel Washington. Participants will learn how FamilyTreeDNA's multi-marker DNA approach—combining Y-DNA, mitochondrial DNA, and autosomal DNA analysis—successfully confirmed the identities of those interred at the site, including Dr. Samuel Walter Washington, his brother George Steptoe Washington Jr., and their mother Lucy Payne.

Beyond the published findings, this session explores unexpected discoveries that emerged from continued Y-DNA testing. We'll examine newly formed subclades and investigate an intriguing genetic match with a descendant carrying a different surname. Through careful analysis of census records and historical documentation, we'll trace how this family—identified as white in later generations—descends from the mixed-race child of a Washington family male and an enslaved woman.

This case study demonstrates how genetic genealogy can reveal hidden branches of prominent American families while illuminating the complex realities of ancestry, race, and enslavement in early American history.

Every Stone a Sermon: Contemplating the incomprehensible future of the Salt Lake Temple

During the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, as news crews from around the world gathered near the Salt Lake Temple, Shaun Stahle reflected on Brigham Young’s prophecy that “the fame of this House” would spread across the earth. That vision has been fulfilled—and continues to unfold.

Built with calloused hands and faith as solid as granite, the Salt Lake Temple has stood as a sentinel for generations, guarding a growing Church. Its construction, spanning 40 years, is a story of sacrifice, perseverance, and prophetic vision. Today, as the temple undergoes a monumental renovation, its future seems as awe-inspiring as its past.

Join Shaun as he recounts key moments from the temple’s history, explores the courage of prophets who guided its transformation, and shares insights that make every stone feel like a sermon waiting to be heard.

      Finding Your Post-Révolution French Ancestors

The French Revolution and the Napoléon's Premier Empire brought civil registration, the Tables Décennales, inheritance tax registers, cadastral registers, the modern départements (counties), and the mysterious Republican calendar! Later in the 19th century, five-year censuses and standardized military recruitment began. In this session, we will cover vital records of course, but also the bountiful sources you may not be aware of: the "Tables de décès et de successions", notarial records, mortgage records, hospital records, and incarceration records. We will also discuss the standardized geographic INSEE codes associated with départements and municipalities, and offer tips for easily obtaining 20th century death certificates which are offline. The issue of disappearing graves will be mentioned. Historical context will be provided with particular attention to border changes, and practical advice about newspaper searches will be given. Griffith’s Valuation and Beyond: Land Records in Irish Genealogy

Griffith’s Valuation is a vital resource for Irish genealogists, but effectively utilizing it requires a deeper understanding that extends beyond just the listed names. This session will explore the purpose of the Valuation: why it was created, what it intended to record, and how it fits into the broader system of taxation and landholding in 19th-century Ireland. We will walk through what was recorded, when, and how to interpret key details such as valuation amounts, lessors, and sequencing. We will also review the Valuation Office and the Cancellation Books. Along the way, we will consider the social and economic context these records reflect—what they can tell you about your ancestor’s status, neighbors, and even motivations for migration.

How to Use Rare Disease Mutations to Find Relatives

ConnectMyVariant introduces people who have the same rare disease risk mutation, or pathogenic variant, to each other. Rare genetic variants provide a unique opportunity to build family trees. This class will show how to use that rare variant information to find shared ancestors. Combining rare variant information with AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, or GEDMATCH tools can sometimes be helpful, but can also lead to wrong turns. When more than two or three people share the same rare variant, genetic triangulation strategies may be useful. The class will be interesting for everyone and most useful for people who know about a specific inherited risk variant in their family.

Victorians to Elizabethans: British research in the twentieth century

Did your family live in Britain in the twentieth century? Are you interested in their story? We often neglect the twentieth century as being ‘not really history’; sometimes we don't research our more recent ancestors with the same vigor as earlier ones. Perhaps because we knew them in person, we don't seek them out in the documentary record. There is plenty to be discovered about individuals and the communities in which they lived, when investigating our more recent British family history. Twentieth century research brings with it the difficulties of larger and more mobile populations, as well as records that are closed to view but families can be traced and many records are available. This presentation introduces a range of resources that will help those with twentieth century British ancestry to bring their more recent ancestors to life.

What's in a Name? Understanding Jewish given names

We're all familiar with nicknames and diminutives in our native languages. Many of use are unfamiliar with Hebrew and Yiddish names and their variations. Records of Eastern European Jews most often use a person's Hebrew or Yiddish name, and depending on the time period and place a person lived, may also have a legal secular name. After emigrating from their place of birth or residence, immigrants were free to adopt a new given name. For Jewish immigrants this often meant choosing a name that had no relationship to their original name. How do you find their name? How do you understand the variations of it that might have been used?

      Complexities in Indigenous Genealogical Research

Indigenous genealogical research has inherent complex issues that are more frequently encountered than in research done in many other communities. This session will address complexities including inconsistent naming and terminology; systematic destruction of family relationships through boarding schools, foster care, adoption, early death, and other mechanisms; oral tradition vs. written records; inaccurate and incomplete records created by people outside the community (ie census takers); and some researchers' disinclination to believe oral history. We will conclude with strategies for overcoming these complexities. Panelists represent tribes from across North America.

Pioneer Temple Records and the Untapped Information and Relationships They Contain

Temple records have been kept from the early days of the church starting in Nauvoo. Many of the records from 1855 forward contain birth dates, birth places and many times parent’s names. Heir indexes were compiled by each temple from about 1855-1940s to show who was the proxy for temple work and what was their relation to the person for whom the ordinances were performed. Many of these early pioneer baptisms for the dead never received their endowment. Therefore, there are clues to immediate and extended family members. These underutilized records available at the FamilySearch Library in Salt Lake can provide a wealth of information about our early pioneer ancestors and have clues leading to their origins.

Conducting Holocaust Research: Methodology and Resources

Among the many atrocities that underscore the Holocaust, this period served as a defining event in the genealogical history of the Jewish people. Not only was one-third of the worldwide Jewish population decimated, but both survivors and the greater Jewish world lost their connection to both family and history. Consequently, a common belief is that genealogical research is pointess because there’s nothing left to find. Genealogy at the Crossroads: International Links in Greece

Nestled at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean Sea, Greece has long served as a vibrant gateway linking continents, peoples, and civilizations. For centuries, Greeks migrated throughout the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean, while many others journeyed these lands for trade, war, refuge, and education. Despite this, the significance of Greece and its rich archival heritage in international genealogy have often been overlooked. Through a genealogical lens and the utilization of newly accessible online sources this session will uncover international stories rooted in Greece: WWI soldiers from Europe and its colonies, Protestant missionaries, students of the region’s first university, Philhellene Europeans and Americans, Jewish communities, and Muslim populations. Greek genealogy sources hold vital importance for researchers worldwide, and showcase how interconnected human stories and genealogies are!

Searching For a Long-Lost Family Connections

Ms. Hunt’s journey to England to find her long-lost brother was marked by persistence, historical archives, and memory echoes. The path to discovering family connections was a gift to her father. It was emotional and challenging, especially before modern technology, mobile phones, and DNA simplified the process.

As a researcher determined to piece together fragments of the past and the need for bone marrow for a dying sister, she began her quest by contacting the Society of Genealogists in London. This institution offered resources and guidance that proved invaluable. A year after initiating contact with them and losing her sister to cancer, she found herself sifting through dusty records in the General Register Office—a repository of births, deaths, and marriages—during a time of national mourning, as England grieved the loss of our beloved people's princess, Diana. The atmosphere was somber, amplifying the significance of her pursuit, as the search for her brother.

      Swedish Probate Records

Probate records or estate inventories are the second most popular source for researching ancestors in Sweden. These records can prove genealogical relationships and locate missing relatives. They offer valuable insights into your ancestor’s life. Estate inventories are divided into two primary sections: the preamble or ingress, which gives information about the deceased and names the heirs, and the inventory, which details the deceased’s assets and debts. The presentation will provide a short historical background, show the participant how to find these records, and offer tips on reading and interpreting them.

Create and Share Your Family History Through Videos

We have stories that we cherish and wish to pass down to our family, both now and for future generations. Whether big or small they can evoke laughter, tears, and fond memories. It is essential to record these stories in an engaging way that encourages your family to hear them. A unique approach is to create short videos of an event, place, home, or an object that combine images and a personal narrative. Upload each video to your own YouTube channel, organizing them into playlists. Tell your life or a family member's life in short videos organized into a playlist. Grandma will feel like a movie star, having their life told through videos. Once uploaded, you can easily share these precious memories solely with your family or with selected friends. The YouTube channel is also a great place to upload electronic versions of old Reel to Reel, VHS or videos from your phone. All of these stories will not be forgotten and will continue to resonate through generations.

DNA Case Study: Finding an 1877 Birth Father with Genetic Affairs, BanyanDNA, and No Birth Record

Flora was born around 1877 to Martha Speaks, but no birth record named her father. Martha married George Nida, but no marriage record was found. Was George Flora’s father or stepfather? A well-verified tree could not answer the question—but DNA could. Flora’s great-granddaughter, Elizabeth, tested at Ancestry and FTDNA. Analysis of her matches using Genetic Affairs' AutoLineage clusters and reconstructed trees revealed connections to descendants of George Nida’s siblings and cousins. The only plausible explanation was that George was Flora’s biological father. To confirm this, BanyanDNA was used to compare two tree hypotheses—one with George as Flora’s father and one without. The analysis returned a 100% probability that George Nida was her biological father. This case highlights how DNA clustering, reconstructed trees, and probabilistic tools can help resolve paternity when no records survive.

Attendees would benefit from knowing how to work with DNA matches and interpret shared matches.

Finding Fortunato: Merging a Foundling’s Identity Across Continents

Immigrant laborers flocked to New York in the early 1900s, often changing their names to assimilate. Families moved from one town to another, chasing work.

Italian immigrant Gennaro Cesta died at work in the Bronx, leaving behind eight children. An autopsy report named his father ‘Furtunato,’ but Italian records identified him as the son of Stanislao, a foundling, and an unnamed mother. Who were Gennaro’s parents?

Through this case study, you will learn how to trace your immigrant ancestors and use cluster research to prove identity. You will also learn how to research foundlings and how circumstances of birth influence records across generations.

Using Historical Geography to Pinpoint Locations in Your Family’s Past

Identifying the exact location of an ancestor’s residence or the site of a key life event often requires piecing together hidden geographic clues. City directories are obvious, but rural postal routes, censuses, deeds, and land descriptions can all provide those answers as well. Burial grounds, churches, mills, and other local landmarks frequently help narrow down locations, especially when referenced alongside tax records or deeds. Abutters and natural features like watercourses offer additional geographic context, enabling the reconstruction of historical neighborhoods. Once these clues are gathered, modern tools such as GIS, Google Maps, and Google Earth can be used to document and visualize the identified sites with greater precision.

Attendees would benefit from knowing how to access deed records, census records, and a digital map.
