Reuben Floyd is my gggg-grandfather who was born about 1768 somewhere in Virginia, son of John Floyd Sr and Mary (maiden name unknown). It is believed by many researchers that John Floyd Sr left Chester County, South Carolina and went with his son John Floyd Jr to Butts County, Georgia, where he died. My research on my ancestor Reuben Floyd began in 1985 after I attended a Floyd Reunion in Tishomingo Co Mississippi. My research is ongoing and the following is by no means complete.

Reuben Floyd is known to have had 3 brothers:

(1) Samuel Floyd who died Nov 1809 by hanging after being convicted of shooting Col. Elijah Nunn, sheriff of Chester Co SC when Sheriff Nunn attempted to serve a bail writ on Samuel. [See: The Centinel, Gettysburg, PA, April 26, 1809 and CHESTER COUNTY COURTHOUSE, COURT OF GENERAL SESSIONS, MINUTE BOOK 1809--1810, PAGE 33: THE STATE VS. SAMUEL FLOYD, SPRING TERM, WED 11/1/1809]. Samuel and wife Rebecca are known to have had 3 sons and 3 daughters. After Samuel's death, Rebecca Floyd appears on the 1810 and 1820 US censuses, living next door to Reuben Floyd.

(2) John Floyd Jr b about 1766 Virginia, died after Sep 1850 in Butts Co Georgia, married Mourning Mayo, daughter of Robert Mayo (1740-1817) and Elizabeth Richardson. John Jr and Mourning are buried at Sandy Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in the old section in back. On the 1850 census in Butts Co Georgia, John and Mourning Floyd are both 84 years old, both born in Virginia. Their son Reuben Thompson Floyd lived in Georgia until his parents died and then moved to Cass County, Texas.

(3) David Floyd b about 1768 Virginia.

Reuben Floyd moved to Chester District South Carolina and appears there on the 1810 US census as Ruben Floyd. A marriage record has been located for a Reuben Floyd to Mary Jordan in Chowan Co NC for 20 Feb 1807. Reuben may well have had a first marriage, so it is possible that the 10 children named in his Will are his children with his first wife and also those children that were born of his marriage to a Mary Jordan. In any event, there are 10 children named in Reuben's Will.

1) William B. Floyd - research ongoing. William B. is the first child named in his father's Will. Note: William B. is NOT named in the lawsuit filed in Chester Co South Carolina May 7, 1836 entitled "Coleman Crosby vs. Mary Terry et al" -- there are only 9 children named: John, Mary, Cicely, David, Sarah, Martha, Jane, James and Rebecca.

2) John Floyd b. abt 1807, d. after 1870 Tishomingo County, Mississippi, married Margaret Richardson Mayo. (My ggg-grandparents)

3) Sarah Floyd b. abt 1810 married Nathan Ragsdale.

4) Martha Floyd married Newton H. Mayo, a cousin, and died before 1836.

5) David Floyd b. March 16 1812, d. 1863 Illinois, married cousin Sarah "Sally" Mayo, daughter of John Mayo and Lucy Harbin, and sister of Margaret Richardson Mayo who married John Floyd, son of Reuben Floyd. David Floyd and wife Sally moved to Tishomingo County, Mississippi where they are first found on the Miss. state census of 1841.

6) Mary Floyd born abt 1817, died in Arkansas. She and husband Nicholas C. Roberts were in Talladega County, Alabama when he died age 46 in February of 1860. Mary and their children are on the 1860 US census there. She continued on to Arkansas with the children, first to Bradley County and then to Dorsey County (which became Cleveland County in 05 Mar 1885). Nicholas C. Roberts was the grandson of Elder Nicholas Roberts who was the pastor for 32 years of Beaver Creek Church and died Nov 1 1843 in Fairfied District South Carolina.

7) Jane Floyd b abt 1821.

8) James Floyd b Dec 1 1819, d Jan 12 1902 Union Co, Miss. He is buried along with his wife Martha J. Parman at Gerizim Cemetery near Myrtle, Union County. James lived in Pontotoc, Benton and Union counties in Mississippi.

9) Cicely Floyd b. 1822, d. Arkansas. She married Bartlett Pannell June 4, 1837 in Chester County SC when she was 16 years old. Cicely and Bart moved to Tishomingo Co Miss (see 1850 US census, Bartley Pannel and Sisley Pannel). From Mississippi, they moved to Arkansas and are on US censuses: 1860 Van Buren Co, 1870 Polk Co, and 1880 Howard Co. Cicely (Sicily Pannell) is on the 1900 US census, widowed, living in household of son James Pannell. On both the 1870 and 1880 US census, Cicely states father born in Virginia, mother born in So Carolina.

10) Rebecca Floyd b 1824. In her father Reuben Floyd's Will (signed Jan. 27, 1824, probated Nov 21, 1825, Chester County SC) Rebecca is mentioned as "the one my wife is now pregnant with." Rebecca's mother Mary Floyd, widow of Reuben, married William Terry after Reuben's death. They can be found on the 1830 US census, Chester Co, SC. The name of the unborn child mentioned in Reuben's Will was determined by her being named as Rebecca Floyd in a court case filed May 7 1836 in Chester County surrounding the disposition of the land which Reuben Floyd left to his widow Mary Floyd who had intermarried with one William Terry who had deserted her.
