the following information is found in the findagrave.com Memorial# 47292774 for John Linebarger:

JOHN LINEBARGER was born in about 1774 in Lincoln County, North Carolina and died on 6 May 1847 in West Union, Parke County, Indiana. He was the son of JOHANNES LINEBARGER [born before 1757 in Pennsylvania; died in 1824 in Beatty's Ford, North Carolina] and ELIZABETH [HEFFELFINGER] LINEBARGER. His grandfather, JOHANNES LEUENBERGER [born circa 1720 in Schwarzenburg, a canton of Bern, Switzerland] had come to the American colonies with his parents in 1734 on a ship from Rotterdam to Philadelphia and after settling there for a brief period moved the family to North Carolina.

JOHN LINEBARGER grew up in Lincoln County, North Carolina and as a young boy he "insisted on going with the men in his community to fight the British in the Battle of Kings Mountain, North Carolina."

In 1799, JOHN LINEBARGER was married to ANNA MARIA HOOT and they became the parents of 8 children who were all born in Lincoln County, NC. In 1820, JOHN LINEBARGER sold his holdings in North Carolina and moved his family with a four horse team to Bartholomew County, Indiana. In the Spring of 1822, he moved his family again to Reserve Township, Parke County, Indiana where he settled after clearing 160 acres of timberland. He eventually increased his land ownership there to about 400 acres.

During his lifetime JOHN LINEBARGER served as a Constable and Justice of the Peace. In North Carolina, the LINEBARGER's were Lutherans, but after the move to Indiana, JOHN LINEBARGER and his family became Methodists. He donated land in Parke County, Indiana and was instrumental in establishing the First Methodist Church there. This "Linebarger Chapel" still exists near the town of West Union, eight miles north of Rockville, Indiana. The Linebarger Cemetery is adjacent to it. There is documentation of a family Bible and Hymn Book that belonged to JOHN and MARY LINEBARGER which states that the Hymn Book was published in 1807 in German town, Pennsylvania and filled with music written by JOHN LINEBARGER.

A FAMILY OF FIVE REPUBLICS, a book written by PAUL MYRON LINEBARGER and WALTER FRANKLIN LINEBARGER, printed by W.B. Conkey Company, Hammond, Indiana in 1925, contains a well researched history of this LINEBARGER family.
