History

The traditional residence of the Wiyot Tribe was in the far northwest corner of what is now California, around Humboldt Bay and the mouths of Mad River and Eel River. Most of the present-day Wiyot live in non-Indian communities. However, some reside in Blue Lake, Rohnerville, Table Bluff, and Trinidad Rancherias.

Brief Timeline

1806: Humboldt Bay discovered by Captain Jonathan Winship

1850: settlers arrive

1860: massacre on Gunther's Island, many Wiyot killed

1860: Wiyot move to Fort Humboldt for proteciont

1860: moved to Klamath River Reservation

1862: Klamath River Reservation flooded
