Local, School, Church and Organization Histories
Local Histories
Local histories have been published in Manitoba for a long period of time. Many were published to celebrate a significant anniversary for the community or the province. These histories serve as an excellent resource to learn what churches, schools, cemeteries, businesses, newspapers and organizations have existed in the community. Many have a brief history about the earliest settlers along with maps to show the owners of the land from the first owner to the owner when the history was written. Another section may list the names and pictures of those who have served or where killed while in the military. The family history section is the largest part of the book.
HINTS:
•Not all families wished to submit information about their family to the book.

School, Church, and Organization Histories
These histories were usually published to mark a particular anniversary for the group. They should not be over looked because they often list the teachers, pastors, and those who served in the various offices. Biographies and pictures sometimes are included in these small booklets.
Availability
A large collection of local histories is found in the Manitoba Legislative Library. Early histories could be found on microfiche in the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions collection or the Bibliography of the Prairie Provinces to 1953 collection. The smaller histories can be found in local and school libraries, the local church or church archives or among the organization records.
