History
Parent County
Sampson County was established in 1784 from Duplin County. Early court records are missing partially caused by Federal sympathizers in 1865 and clerk's office fire of 1921. Early deed books of Duplin County prior to 1784 are listed herein. County seat: Sampson Court House (ca. 1785-1818); Clinton (1818-present).
