Obituaries have been published in North Carolina since 1759. Obituaries may provide information such as the age of the deceased, birth date and place, names of living relatives and their residences, maiden name, occupation, death date, cause of death, and place of burial. Deceased family members are frequently mentioned. Obituaries may also mention previous places of residence, immigration information, religion, and any social activities or organizations in which the deceased was involved.

See the "Newspapers" section above for several books listing obituaries. An example of obituary notices is:

Obituary Notices: Copied from the Biblical Recorder—A Baptist Newspaper of Raleigh, North Carolina. N.p., 1938–1941. (Family History Center book 975.6 V4w [vol. 1]; films 824054–55 (vol. 3).) These volumes provide name, church or county, and date recorded in church minutes.
