Historical Facts
Lawrence County is named for Captain James Lawrence who was mortally wounded while commanding the USS Chesapeake in the War of 1812. He is best known for his dying command "Don't give up the ship!" [1]

Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD)
The Illinois State Archives administers a system of Illinois Regional Archives Depositories (IRAD) to manage the archival records of local governments. Local governments which have transferred records to the regional depositories include counties, townships, municipalities, and school districts. The records of Lawrence County come under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Illinois University (EIU) regional depository.

The Lawrence County Historical Society was organized in 1961 for the collection and preservation of Lawrence County history. Lawrence Lore is the Lawrence County, Illinois Historical Society blog. Each day the editor posts articles about Lawrence County history. Research is from primary sources. Names of individuals are included. Articles include biographies, obits, military records, business owners, as well as general news items. Finding aids are provided in the form of topic names as well as a search engine to use for specific names. Photographs are included in web albums such as identified school pictures. |

Vital Records
See Illinois Vital Records for more information about Vital records in Illinois. Vital records consist of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. Original birth and death certificates recorded until the year 1916 are kept by the Lawrence County Clerk while those recorded after 1916 are kept by the Illinois Department of Public Health with a copy to the County Clerk. Original marriage records are usually kept by the County Clerk from the establishment of the county to the present. Original divorce records are generally in the office of the Circuit Court Clerk.
