Newspapers
Media freedom in Indonesia increased considerably after the end of President Suharto's rule, during which the now-defunct Ministry of Information monitored and controlled domestic media and restricted foreign media. The number of printed publications had increased significantly since 1998. There are hundreds of new magazines, newspapers, and tabloids. Notices of births, marriages, and deaths; obituaries, military, government and business notices; and news of the day were printed in these newspapers. Some compilations have been made of the genealogical information found in early newspapers.
