The Republic of Indonesia is a nation in Southeast Asia. Comprising 17,508 islands, it is the world's largest archipelagic state. With a population of over 234 million people, it is the world's fourth most populous country and the most populous Muslim-majority nation, although officially it is not an Islamic state. Other neighboring countries include Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Consisting of the territory of the former Nederlands Indië (Netherlands East Indies), Indonesia's main island groups are the Greater Sunda Islands, which include Java, Sumatra, Central and South Borneo (Kalimantan), and Celebes (Sulawesi); the Lesser Sunda Islands, consisting of Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores, and the western part of Timor, (East Timor was till late 1975 a colony of Portugal, see: [East Timor]); the Moluccas (Maluku), with Ambon, Seram, and Halmahera; and the Riau Archipelago. The most important islands, culturally and economically, are Java, Bali, and Sumatra.
