Consisting of the territory of the former Nederlands Indië (Netherlands East Indies), Indonesia's main island groups are the Greater Sunda Islands, which include Java, Sumatra, Central and South Borneo (Kalimantan), and Celebes (Sulawesi); the Lesser Sunda Islands, consisting of Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores, and the western part of Timor, (East Timor was till late 1975 a colony of Portugal, see: [East Timor]); the Moluccas (Maluku), with Ambon, Seram, and Halmahera; and the Riau Archipelago. The most important islands, culturally and economically, are Java, Bali, and Sumatra. After years of dispute with the Dutch, Papua was formally annexed by Indonesia in August 1969.
