1 November 1861: El Paso County was createdas an original county. In 1859 it was formed from old Arapahoe County in the territory of Kansas. El Paso county was created by the Colorado legislature, and was one of Colorado's original 17 counties. It includes approximately 2130 square miles and has a mountainous western side changing to high plains in the east. The altitude ranges from mountain heights of 14,110 feet (4301 m) at the summit of Pikes Peak to 5,095 feet (1569 m) on the plains. County seat: Colorado Springs [2]
