• help avoid the use of one or more ampersands (&) in Wiki footnotes. Ampersands in a Wiki footnote will multiply like tribbles, and the techies haven't found the time to fix the bug.

• help display image captions that sometimes want to disappear, especially when the the footnotes are complicated or dodgey.
