• 1870’s. Clear Creek founded as a logging camp, later for coal mining.

• 1881-82. Helper developed as a freight terminal and for coal mining.

• 1894. Carbon County was established. Received name from the coal deposits in the region.
• 1897. Butch Cassidy and Elzy Lay robbed the Pleasant Valley Coal Company in nearby Castle Gate.
• 1942. East Carbon City had its beginnings.
• 1935 – 1957. J. Bracken Lee a political figure who served as mayor of Price, then governor of the state of Utah.

In Utah, such records may be difficult to find. Try records of the church they may have attended. Realize, however, that such records may have not been preserved, and would not be in the typical records of membership.

It is possible there were records kept by civilian authorities. Ask town or county officials and local librarians and the State Archives. Also try National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (online).

Before 1894

Carbon County, Utah was formed on 8 March 1894.

      If your records show the person was born here before the county was formed,
      search parent counties :

Before county formation, go to Utah Censuses to locate the family around the time of birth.

1894 -1897

No birth records were created for Carbon County, Utah by either by county or state civil authorities in this time period.

Follow these suggestions to find birth information for this time period:

• Utah Death Certificates 1904-1961 give birth date and place (recorded at the time of death), names of parents, and name of spouse. Search by names or by exact death date.
• Church records usually give birth date and place and names of parents.

• See also neighboring counties for birth information, due to family members living in that area, religious preferences, convenience, and other reasons.

1898-present

County clerks became responsible for recording births beginning in 1898.^[6] In 1905, the State Department of Health assumed responsibility and required the counties to forward copies of the records to them.

It took a few years after the requirements for people, doctors, midwives, and officials to comply, so some early birth registrations were missed.

Records open to the public

Birth records created more than 100 years ago^[7] are open to the public.

• Online index to births 1898–1905 Series 83869  for Carbon County, Utah by the Utah State Archives. (Free) Search by names of parents, as many entries do not give the child's name. Each entry includes date of birth, sex, residence, etc.
  • FamilySearch Library copy: FHL film 484812 It. 2-3 . There are no names of children in the records. (Census or Churches and Religious Groups records will help.) This collection has been transcribed and is available in the link below hosted by UT GenWeb.
• 1906-1910 online images for Carbon County, Utah at the State Archives. Browse the "not yet indexed" area by year and county. Most entries do have names of children.

Death

• 1898-1905 - Carbon County death records 1898-1905 at UTGenWeb - free. FHL Film 484812 Items 2-3. The death register contains four pages of about thirty-four entries per page. Information included in a death entry includes: Name, Occupation, Age, Term of Residence,Single or Married, Widow or Widower, Sex, Race, Color, Last Place of Residence, Cause of Death, Date of Death, Name of Party Making Report, Number. In the earlier entries the "Race" field usually provides nationality such as Italian, English, Welsh, Danish

• 1904-1956 - Utah Death Certificates 1904 - 1956 -A free internet access to the 1904-1956 death certificates can be viewed at the Family Search Historical Records site. Utah requires a death certificate before a burial is completed. A death certificate may contain information as to the name of the deceased, date of death, and place of death, as well as the age, birthdate, parents, gender, marital status, spouse and place of residence.
