In 1789 North Carolina ratified the Constitution, was admitted the union, and ceded her westermost counties to the United States. The United States used these counties to form the Southwest Territory. This territory became the State of Tennessee in 1796.
Blount County now in Tennessee was created by the Southwest Territory in 1795 from from Knox County. Maryville became the county seat.
