Established in 1983, Muskogee County Genealogical Society provides research services, publications, and online databases for those researching Muskogee County ancestors. Meetings, and educational opportunities are provided for all genealogists regardless of their research focus locations. Local MCGS members provide volunteer services and financial support to the Local History Genealogy collection at the Muskogee Public Library. MCGS is a member of the Federation of Genealogical Societies.

Zion Genealogical Society

The Zion Genealogical Society serves not only the Zion-Benton Community but also includes the neighboring Lake County, Illinois communities of: Beach Park, Gurnee, North Chicago, Park City, Wadsworth, Waukegan, Wildwood, and Winthrop Harbor.

The Zion Genealogical Society is sponsored by the Zion-Benton Public Library. Mail to the Society should be sent in care of the Zion-Benton Public Library at 2400 Gabriel Avenue, Zion, Illinois 60099-2280. The Society’s genealogical research materials are housed at the Zion-Benton Public Library for public use. Our general meetings are held on the third Monday of each month and begin at 7:00 p.m. These meetings are open to the public at the Beach Park Village Hall at 11270 West Wadsworth Road, Beach Park, Illinois.

The Society membership year runs from September 1 to August 31. Individual annual dues are $15 (online newsletter) or $18 (paper newsletter). Family annual dues are $18 (online newsletter) or $21 (paper newsletter). Lifetime membership is also available for $150 (online or paper newsletter). Dues may be paid at Society meetings or sent to the Zion-Benton Public Library in care of the Society. Please notify the Society promptly of any changes to either your postal or e-mail address.

The Illuminator (on-line newsletter) is published the first week of February, May, August and November. Items which appear in The Illuminator are carefully selected by the staff. These items are included for the convenience of our members. The ZGS makes no claims on the validity or accuracy of the statements made. Contributions to The Illuminator are very welcome. Articles may be submitted to the editor or mailed to the Society as stated above. The staff of The Illuminator reserves the right to limit the length of articles, subject to available space. Articles can also be e-mailed to the Society at ziongenealogy@aol.com.

The Westby Area Historical Society (WAHS) meets on the first Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Thoreson House. Winter meetings are held at the Halvorson Apartments.

The first settlers arrived in Vernon County, Wisconsin in the 1840s, and many of their descendants are still in the area. Others have carried their heritage to the ends of the country and beyond. Our goal is to collect and preserve their stories, family artifacts and other memorabilia, and to educate future generations in the heritage of this community.

The Clerk of Courts prepares and maintains the records for the Criminal Division of the Court of Common Pleas. The Clerk signs and affixes the Seal of the Courts to all writs and processes, administers oaths and affirmations, and assumes custody of the seal and records of the Courts. The Clerk certifies and distributes orders of the Court. The Clerk also certifies and prepares bills of costs for the defendants and utilizes the computerized financial management system to disburse fines, costs and restitution.[1] For the HillierLW/Sandbox Laurie Clerk of Courts address see the Courthouse section on this page.

For many counties copies of court records may be found at the Pennsylvania State Archives and in the FamilySearch collection. Note that within these collections some films may contain the same records, but have different titles. Other titles are not duplicates. See Finding Court Records at other repositories within this section for links to the online catalogs for these two collections. Films at the Pennsylvania State Archives are not available for inter-library loan. If court records are available FamilySearch films may be ordered at a local Family History Center.

The Courts of Common Pleas are the trial courts of Pennsylvania. Major civil and criminal cases are heard in these courts. Judges also decide cases involving adoption, divorce, child custody, abuse, juvenile delinquency, estates, guardianships, charitable organizations and many other matters. The Common Pleas courts are organized into 60 judicial districts. HillierLW/Sandbox Laurie has its own judicial district. Judges of the Common Pleas courts are elected to 10-year terms. A president judge and a court administrator serve in each judicial district.[2]

Online Naturalization Indexes and Records

Naturalization records can contain information about immigration and nativity. Prior to 1906, it is rare to find the town of origin in naturalization records. See Pennsylvania Naturalization for more information about the types of records and availability.

Naturalizations granted at the county level were kept by the office of the Prothonotary. Naturalizations could also be granted on the Federal Court level.

Probate matters in HillierLW/Sandbox Laurie are handled by the Orphans' Court and start when the county was created. To obtain original probate records, contact the Orphan's Court in the County Courthouse.

In addition to wills and administrations, the Orphans' Court also handles: audits of accounts of executors, administrators, trustees, and guardians; distribution of estates of decedents, incompetents, and minors; appointment and control of guardians; adoptions; appeals from the Register of Wills involving probate matters; inheritance tax appeals and various petitions and motions.

The Schuylkill County Archives is a central depository for all county government records. These include records from the Clerk of the Courts, Prothonotary, Recorder of Deeds, and Register of Wills. Most records are open to the public. The oldest records predate the creation of the county in 1811. Early records have been microfilmed with the originals in storage at the archives. Records of interest to genealogists and family historians include:

The Moravian Archives is the official repository for the records of the Moravioan Church in America – Northern Province. This covers the Moravian churches in the United States (except for North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Virginia) and Canada. The Archives in Bethlehem also holds records from the Moravain churh in Alaska, Labrador, Nicaragua and the Eastern West Indies.

The Archives is located in a modern 9,200 square foot building with two climate-controlled vaults. It contains approximately 8,000 linear feet of material.

The collection includes finding aids of the Moravian collections, church registers, the Memoir Index, records of the mission to the American Indians from 1740 to 1820 (indexed in the Fliegel Index), historical newspapers on microfilm, and a photo collection.

Services include monthly lectures, tours, a German Script course, research by mail, reproduction orders, translation, and publications including a monthly electronic newletter.

Family History Centers (FHCs) are branches of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, and are located all over the world. Their goal is to provide resources for family history research.

The main FHC for HillierLW/Sandbox Laurie is the Greensburg Pennsylvania Family History Center. For additional nearby Family History Centers, search online in the FHC directory.


The Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County Pennsylvania maintains a library at the Somerset Historical Center. The collection includes records of birth, marriage, death, maps, military, newspapers, obituaries, tax, estate, family files, county histories, church records, and an online WPA Cemetery Index. A genealogical research service is offered with fees beginning at $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

The Cemetery Database at the Mennonite Heritage Center includes 86,000 burial records from 125 local cemeteries.  Records cover cemeteries in the counties of Berks, Bucks, Butler, Chester, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, and Westmoreland. The database provides transcriptions from Mennonite, Brethren, Lutheran, Reformed, Union, Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal, community, and private cemeteries. Search the list of cemeteries and the alphabetical surname lists in Adobe PDF format.

Visit the Mennonite Heritage Center to search the cemetery database by various criteria. The transcriptions are available for further research at the MHC library.

Church records and the information they provide vary significantly depending on the denomination and the record keeper. They may contain information about members of the congregation, such as age, date of baptism, christening, or birth; marriage information and maiden names; and death date. The aim of this site is to provide a photographic record of the old graveyard  at St Mary's Church. Heworth. Gateshead and as a resource for the benefit of genealogists and the descendants of the people interred there, who live far away and for anyone interested in graveyard inscriptions and graveyard architecture. I now have photographs over 700 graves in the old churchyard, with more to come.

St. Mary's Church Heworth
St Mary’s is the parish church for Heworth, Pelaw, Bill Quay and Wardley, to the east of Gateshead (just opposite Heworth Metro).

St Mary's has an extensive churchyard, with many family graves and some listed graves (such as the photographers' favourite 'Haswell bed'), also a number of servicemen's memorials and the memorial to the 92 men and boys who died in the Felling pit disaster of 1812. We often receive enquiries about graves in the churchyard which we ourselves are not always placed to answer, but we will give whatever guidance we can. Only current burial records are held at the church, historic records are lodged with the Durham County Archives. There is a website about the churchyard which is maintained by a private individual and has no connection to the church.

"Heworth was separated from Jarrow and made a distinct parish in 1834, and at that time comprised the whole of the township of the same name. In 1843 the district of Windy Nook was severed, and in 1866 the district parish of Christ Church, Felling, was formed out of this parish. It now comprises the villages of Heworth, Bill Quay, High Heworth, Pelaw Main (part of), and Wardley, as well as the districts of Heworth Shore and Heworth lane, and part of Whitemere Pool, and has a population of 6000. It is bounded on the north by the Tyne, on the east by Hebburn, on the south-east by Jarrow, south-west by Wrekenton, and on the west by Felling and Windy Nook Parishes.

"Heworth Township has an area of 2892 acres. Its ratable value in November 1893 was £62,473, including the portion within the borough of Gateshead.
