Parish History

Tunstall was a township within Catterick, Yorkshire with Tunstall Ancient Parish. Tunstall Holy Trinity was formed as a parish in 1847 on the building of the church.

TUNSTALL, a township, in the parish of Catterick, union of Richmond, wapentake of Hang-East, N. riding of York, 2 miles (S. W.) from Catterick. There is a place of worship for Wesleyans. [1]

TUNSTALL (All Saints), a parish, in the union of Patrington, Middle division of the wapentake of Holderness, E. riding of York, 5½ miles (N.) from Patrington; containing 159 inhabitants. [2]


In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Tunstall like this:  TUNSTALL, a township-chapelry in Catterick parish, N. R. Yorkshire; 3 miles S of Catterick-Bridge r. station. Post town, Catterick. Acres, 1,262. Real property, £2,139. Pop., 293. Houses, 66. The living is annexed to Catterick. The church was built in 1847. There are a Wesleyan chapel and a slightly endowed school.

The ancient parish (AP) of Catterick was created before 1813. Church of England records began in 1568.
