The Summer 2012 edition of "American Ancestors", published by the New England Historical Genealogical Society reports a research case study (on pp. 43-45) that hinged on the discovery that the Gaelic surname Breheny could be alternated with its English translation, Judge in the records.
This wiki article should make mention of the interchangable use of Gaelic surnames and their English translations and advise the researcher to search both translations in their research.
