Any person alive after 1991 in Sweden is included in the population registration files. For anyone who died after 1991, their file can be ordered easily. In Sweden, these records are easy to obtain.
The simplest route to discover when one’s relative died is to search the Swedish Death Book from 1901-2009.
When an entry is found in the Swedish Death Book, it is very simple to order a copy of this record. One merely needs to write to the archive below. A sample letter is available. The letter can be written in English and easily sent through email. It might take a few weeks for a reply. Do not send a repeat email until after a month with no response to your query, as this is a free service provided by the Skatteverket office.
Each Skatteverket archive is organized by modern day municipality. Multiple parishes are organized on the municipality (kommune) level. A list of municipalities with their parishes can be found on the Skatteverket website.
Choose the appropriate archive for where your relative died from the following list:
Jämtland, Norrbottens, Västerbotten and Västernorrland email@example.com
Dalarna, Gävleborg, Värmland, and Örebro. Also contains the Västra Götaland municipalities of Bengtsfors, Dals-Ed and Åmål firstname.lastname@example.org
Södermanland, Uppsala and Västmanland. Also contains the Stockholm municipalities of Norrtälje, Nykvarn, Salem and Södertälje email@example.com
